Jacqueline Shreibber Statement
Statement of Intent
I draw inspiration from the mosaic of patterns and ornament embedded in artistic traditions of all kinds. Medieval book illumination has always held a special fascination for me.
The intent of my paintings is to interweave figure and pattern; a juxtaposition of the transient with the timeless.
“…Only by the form, the pattern
Can words or music reach
The stillness, as a Chinese jar still
Moves perpetually in its stillness.”
As T.S. Eliot reflects on the nature of poetry and art, I seek to translate this imagery into my painting. The solitary figure, though poised in the moment, becomes timeless as it is immersed into the pattern. Perhaps it is not a movement in space but in time. As T.S. Eliot so beautifully evokes the image:
“We must be still and still moving
Into another intensity.”
